The Bureau of Customs and Border Protection (BCBP) recently received three (3) types of drug detection devices (Handheld Drug Detector, Handheld Narcotic Analyzer, and Handheld Backscatter Screening System) through the Japan International Cooperation System (JICS) grant awarded in FY2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The devices represent the second phase of the grant project and will enhance Customs non-intrusive screening and field testing capabilities at Palau\u2019s points of entry, particularly in efforts to combat illegal drugs such as methamphetamine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Japan-Palau partnership has already strengthened BCBP\u2019s border security through x-ray equipment, which assisted Customs Officers in intercepting packages with presumptive methamphetamine in May. The final phase of the project is expected to include a mobile x-ray truck next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Customs Officers are currently undergoing online training on the new devices, with hands-on training to follow before deployment at the Airport, Post Office, Seaport and field operations. These new technologies will further enhance Customs screening capabilities and strengthen collaborative enforcement efforts with partner law enforcement agencies, including the Bureau of Public Safety (BPS).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
